Position Summary: Roe Environmental Inc. is seeking experienced Lead Marine Mammal Observers (MMO) to provide environmental monitoring and to aid in delivery of a Marine Mammal Monitoring Program for construction of a marine terminal at the Woodfibre LNG project near Squamish, BC. Lead MMOs will be responsible for coordinating daily MMO operations and a field team of 8-15 MMOs and Hydroacoustic Monitors, communicating and implementing regulatory requirements to construction operators, conducting visual observations for marine mammals, supporting deployment and operation of hydroacoustic monitoring equipment, compilation and submission of daily summary reports. Long hours on the water may be required during certain construction periods. On-site camp facilities will be available for non-local candidates, daily transportation to/from project site from Squamish will be available for local candidates.

Position Term: Temporary contract from August 2024 to February 2025, with opportunity for continued full-time employment.

Position Location: The position will primarily involve monitoring on the Woodfibre LNG project in Squamish, BC. Candidates from outside of the Squamish/Vancouver area can expect to be housed in a private room on the Floatel (converted cruise ship) moored on-site during their shift.

Preferred Capabilities:

  • Marine Mammal Observer or marine monitoring/survey experience.
  • MMO, PSO and/or PAM certification and proven experience.
  • Leadership experience.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for client and contractor communications.
  • Experience interpreting regulatory frameworks for mitigation.
  • Familiarity with cetacean and pinniped species identification.
  • SVOP, PCOC or work on boats is an asset.
  • Hydrophone experience is an asset.
  • Comfortable working on boats and in outdoor settings (year-round).
  • Right to work in Canada.

Requirements:

Shift rotation and duration dependent on candidate location. Normal working days are likely to be up to 12 hours.

Preference Given to Candidates With:

  • Priority placement will be given to (1) Squamish Nation members and (2) Indigenous candidates with demonstrated experience, competency, and a good safety track record.
  • Suitable academic background and/or experience with applied science biology work or other related field work.
  • Level 1 First Aid.

Compensation: Competitive rates commensurate with experience.
